At 16 she enrolled in Bennington College, Vermont, where she studied painting under Paul Feeley 1910-66. Her paintings could overwhelm, but seldom did they suffocate. Her practice can be seen as a bridge between the Abstract Expressionists of the 1950s and the Color Field painters of the 1960s. In the 1950s, when the post-war avant-garde was emerging in New York City and Helen Frankenthaler soon came into contact with the scene and entered into the circles of the New York School, where she met, among others, Jackson Pollock. Having exhibited her work for over six decades early 1950s until 2011 , she spanned several generations of abstract painters while continuing to produce vital and ever-changing new work.
